Young radio galaxies and their environments

چکیده
Many of the powerful radio galaxies observed at high redshift are very small, presumably because they are very young. A simple model, which treats the radio source as a bubble expanding into a radially stratified medium, is capable of explaining the main features of their size and luminosity evolution. In particular, the model predicts strong negative luminosity evolution with increasing size, thus accounting for the large number of short-lived small sources in flux-limited samples. A variety of observational characteristics can be understood within the framework of the bubble model. I address three of these: 1) the number versus size statistics, which may provide a clue that jets in radio galaxies are intermittent, with “on–off” cycles lasting only 10 − 10 yr; 2) the rarity of spectral steepening due to synchrotron cooling at frequencies of a few GHz, and its implications for source geometry and assumptions about equipartition; and 3) the prevalence of gigahertz-peaked spectra among small sources. I argue that all of these phenomena are primarily the consequence of the youth and compactness of the radio source, and depend only weakly on environment. There is no need to postulate an ISM with properties any different from that of an ordinary nearby galaxy.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملHigh redshift radio galaxies : Beacons to biased hierarchical galaxy formation within large scale structure
We summarize observations of the properties of powerful radio galaxies and their environments from z = 0 to 5. These data show that some high redshift radio galaxies inhabit regions of gas and galaxy overdensities indicative of proto-cluster environments.
متن کاملThe black hole mass , Eddington ratio , and M bh − σ [ O III ] relation in young radio galaxies
The masses of the central supermassive black holes and the Eddington ratios for a sample of 65 young radio galaxies [27 gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) and 38 compact steepspectrum (CSS) sources] are estimated by various methods. We find that the average BH mass of these young radio galaxies is ≃ 8.3, which is less than that of radio loud QSOs and low redshift radio galaxies (≃ ...
متن کاملEvidence of Jet-ambient Gas Interactions in the Emission-line Region of Seyfert Galaxies
Collimated outflows (ranging from barely collimated winds to actual jets) are present in a wide range of astrophysical objects, four types of them being represented at this conference, namely young stellar objects, planetary nebulae, radio galaxies and Seyfert galaxies. In this paper, I first try to give a brief overview of the basic properties of the outflows and their environments, as they ar...
متن کاملLarge-Scale Environment Properties of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies at z < 0.4
The large-scale environment is believed to affect the evolution and intrinsic properties of galaxies. It offers a new perspective on narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1) which have not been extensively studied in this context before. We study a large and diverse sample of 960 NLS1 galaxies using a luminosity-density field constructed using Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We investigate how the large...
